FAQ
Below are some frequently asked questions which we thought we should publish which spread a little bit more light on who we are, what we are doing, how you can involved, the site itself and why we are doing this.
Q: Where did the name Concrete Canvas come from?
A: It was actually J Bear that initally came up with the name. We felt it clearly describes street art from an artist’s point of view.
Q: Why did you start the site?
A: We basically wanted to document more street art. The steet art scene is constantly changing whether it’s new artists coming and going or fashions within street art. We believe there are three different types of people who relate to street art:
- Street Artists who love doing what they do and want to see other artists work.
- People who do not partake in street art directly, but love seeing the designs left behind by street artists .
- People who see street art as a form of vandalism and hate all forms of it.
The site was developed and started by members of the first and second groups mentioned and so we are definately ‘pro’ street art. Obviously, the last type of person is not who the site was developed for but if we can convert a few people along the way then that’ll make us happy :).
Q: The banner at the top keeps changes ofter, whats with this?
A: The banner at the top highlights specific street art pieces. We aim to change as often as possible for two reasons. One, to keep the site looking fresh. Two, to highlight people’s art work. We do take submissions for this so if your interested in displaying your work there, please get in touch on the contact form.
Q: What is the Flickr of the Week (FOTW)?
A: Flickr of the Week is where we select one Flickr photostream that has really impressed us and we display it on the site for a week.
Q: How can I get my Flickr photostream onto FOTW?
A: The sites team pick their favourite photostream of the week to be displayed. We do not take any submissions for FOTW as we like to display the work of street artists that we are really liking.
Q: What are the previous FOTW’s?
A: You can find all our previous FOTW here.
Q: I have found some great work/artists that I think you guys should be showing your readers!
A: Oh Fantastic! Get straight in touch with us via the contact page.
Q: Do you feel you promote street art and graffiti?
A: We don’t promote street art or graffiti anymore than seeing street art on the street itself. But yes, we definately allow artists to reach out to a larger global audience but we do not promote or encourage people to partake in street art. Vandalism is something completely different and some people often think that street art is vandalism, whilst they are of course allowed their own opinion, we believe they are wrong.
Q: Do you need any other writers?
A: We are constantly looking for people that we feel will benefit and strengthen our team. If you feel you could add something to Concrete Canvas please get in touch via the contact page.
Q: I run a street art website, can we exchange links?
A: Yeh sure. Please get in touch via the contact page and we’ll be happy to sort something out.
Q: Surely advertising goes against what most street artists stand for, so isn’t it ironic to have advertising on a website about street art?
A: Yes, that totally correct and we firmly stand by and respect that opinion of the artists. The vast majority of money that is generated goes back into the website to make for a better experience for the reader. Anyone that advertises with us must have clear connection to the street art scene- this is a criteria that all advertisers must meet. We hope by allowing advertising on the site that we help those organisations which help the street artists. Our RSS feed is a way which readers can access the site content without having toruble with our small amount of adverts if they feel strongly about them.
Q: Who gets the money from advertising?
A: A large percentage of the money generated through advertising will go back into the website to make for a better experience for the reader. However, not all our adverts bring revenue. For example, if a sticker company asked for some advertising space we would love some stickers in return, if it were possible. Stickers would allow us to promote the website. In the end, no money is generated from that advert and two parties are very happy.
