Brighton street blitz ~~ 1st-31st May!

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Hi guys, I really apologise for my absence! Personal things, and all that shizzle. I’d like to really thank human, for continuing to post in my absence,  and to all the loyal members who still visited regularly, despite the lack of blog posts. I have however, been proactive with searching for some additional writers, so at least this should hopefully make sure the site is constantly updated, as I know I’m not the best with that! ;p Anyway, down to the main point of the article!

Brighton street blitz is an event running from the 1st to the 31st of May. The motivation behind this is that Brighton has become filled with art becoming overly commercialised, and how the colour and character is being sucked out of Brighton. They propose that Brighton be turned into an open air art gallery. For four weeks, all people living in or near Brighton, are invited to, in the words of the creators:

“Whether you make murals, stencils, stickers, posters, sculptures, street projections, sign modification/removal/additions, billboard subverting/defacing/destruction etc; Whether creative or destructive; whether to convey a message, brighten up a dull spot, rewire some corporate brainwashing  tactics; whether to leave your mark, remove a stain, express yourself or simply to show your disgust – it’s all valid and all adds to The Blitz!”

I know it’s a tiny bit late, but I still think it’s early enough to be posted.

I can’t wait to see the work produced by this, it should hopefully be good!

I Know What You’re Thinking

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Apparently in Brooklyn there are two artists who know what you are thinking!

Well not quite. But this project is really interesting and highly comical. The two artists in question, Katie Sokoler and Matt Adams, have been putting some thought bubbles up on the walls of the city of Brooklyn and then lying in wait to take a picture of a passer by. The end result is amazing and could catch on so other artists can sit laughing at these poor defenceless pedestrians.

We Heart Stickers!

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Stickers are a great way for artists to get up easily and quickly. No fussing about with paint cans or stencils on the street – just a handful of slaps in your pocket and any wall can be transformed into your canvas instantly. The instantaneous medium has grown hugely over the last few years and is becoming more and more popular with artists looking for a way to distribute their talent.

The first sticker design I’d like to look at is by Pahnl. Pahnl works with stencils and you can see the stencil inspiration behind this sticker making the design simplistic and bold. Great picture too! The two vertical stickers are unknown but are still very interesting.

This next sticker artist hand draws his stickers and has a an almost childish style which brings something new to the street. Big Bozo’s sticker design is unique and interesting, something away from the repetitiveness of many artists.

New Zealand artist solidstate has found a brilliant sticker on the streets. The sticker, shown below, is very cute titled ‘casper the giant has a posse’.

Un-plugged Project

Friday, November 14th, 2008

With the world facing energy issues imminently, environmental groups reminding us of our responsibilty to our planet and governments taxing everything that pollutes the globe, you are probably trying to limit your carbon footprint in one way or another – even if its just to save a bit of cash. The Un-plugged project is growing into a global phenomena taking over the streets of even the most inaccessible urban spaces. Un-plugged is an on-going project highlighting the possible loss of power that humanity will one day face! (A scary thought – can you imagine life without Concrete Canvas!!!).

The Un-plugged project involves the placement of stickers designed to look exactly like mains power sockets. As you probably know, not all countries have the same power sockets and so the variety of stickers is still there. It is a strange site seeing an indoor power socket on the street, especially on the outside of a multi-storey car park.

The project has been active for over 7 years, in 20 countries involving more than 40,000 stickers. Get involved asap and spread the message.

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Our sticker competition has now drawn to a close and our winner has been decided by the forum residents.

We are pleased to announce that we will be getting Matt Robinson’s design produced. He has won 1000 of his design too.

However, as the competition was drawn into a second round of voting due to an initial tie, we will also be getting Cleandemon’s (who came second) design produced. He will be receiving 500 of his design:

Thanks to all those that entered. Keep checking back on Concrete Canvas for more competitions.
