Elph

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Elph is a fantastic Scottish writer. His work is bright, varied and detailed: a combination of features which produces his unique work. I’m a big fan of his outrageous style and intense detail showing what talent free hand artists can achieve. Elph’s locations he’s painted in is quickly increasing and he featured at the recent Cans 2 event (see picture 2 below). Take a look at the work below from the Edinburgh artist:

I look forward to seeing more of his work in the future.

JR in London

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

JR hasn’t had enough of defacing London’s buildings despite hitting up the Tate Modern earlier this year. His work is HUGE! London street art photographer, Romanywg, was on the scene again getting some beautiful images of the work.

Thanks to Romanywg for letting us use the pics.

Female Street Artists

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

This post has been totally inspired by a post in our forums checking out (:P) female street artists and it has completely opened my eyes to a whole host of female artists. Call me a chauvinistic pig or whatever (please don’t :’( ) I wasn’t aware of this many great female artists. Overall I’m sure there are many more male street artists than female artists and I know we recently featured Mishfit a few weeks back but that really isn’t good enough coverage of the other gender in my opinion, so it’s about time things changed. I’ve selected a few artists which I am really impressed with that were mentioned in the forum, sorry I couldn’t have featured all of them.

First up is Swoon, a street artist from NYC. Her life size wheatpastes are highly detailed and often tell more than one story. For example the piece below. At first glance its just a girl but look closer and you’ll see an incredible array of other figures.

Ghetto Kitty is another awesome female artist. Initially from the USA she now prowls around Australia. Her work is predominantly stencil work with a small amount of free hand but also, like Swoon, does dabble in a little wheatpaste.  Gorm says:

ghetto kitty whos work make me first try making stencils.

Well this isn’t the last you’ll hear of female artists on Concrete Canvas. We are going to be keeping are ears closer to the ground where the ladies are concerned. If you hear about anything new happening don’t hesitate to contact us regarding it.

PS. I hope I’ve rid myself of my chauvinistic pig title?

D*Face Makes History

Friday, September 26th, 2008

D*Face has set up some fantastic street installations in London. The brilliance of the pieces is that they look like they should be there. The stone used looks exactly like London’s buildings complete with grime.
